“See Me” Project Development Fundraiser

"See Me" is a new work built from our 2026 Body Liberation in Dance Report. Drawing from our survey data, where 96% of respondents reported hearing negative weight comments in dance settings and 81% said sizeism hindered them or someone they know from dancing, the work confronts sizeism head on. “See Me” explores how thick Black women dancers are surveilled, mistreated, and dismissed the moment they declare themselves dancers. Through a fusion of hip-hop and contemporary dance, live sound looping, and interactive digital media, audience participation, "See Me" stages a counter narrative that resists the dominant gaze and demands visibility of thick Black women dancing bodies.
